For quite some time, the content included in videogames for many people can be considered quite violent and strong, as products that easily can consume impressionable children and young men, being inappropriate at many levels. This is a concern parents have been having for many years now, but fortunately they count on with valuable tools to spot inappropriate content thanks to the ESRB ratings.
Let us talk about these ratings and the organization that designed them, in order to avoid inappropriate access to strong, sexual and violent content on behalf of our children, with specific rating categories.
What is ESRB and what does it stand for?
ESRB is the acronym for Entertainment Software Rating Board as a self-regulatory organization, which focuses on designing rating boards and categories to rank videogames and also music, in terms of a few parameters and specific description of the product that makes it be included in a category and appropriate age.
In this way, parents can know exactly at the moment of purchasing a product or videogame which content has on it and for what age is recommended in first instance, with the help of the ESRB rating category, taking into account aspects shown in the product that may or may not be appropriate for one audience or the other.
Content and parameters considered for ESRB ratings
In total, there are almost fifty types of contents as parameters that influence the ranking and category in which a game can be included. In general, these are related to aspects of language, blood and gore, humor, violence, sexual content and nudity, gambling, drugs and tobacco reference.
Depending on the inclusion of such content in a game, the severity of it and which of them are actually present in the product, a rating category will be applied for parents to known what their kids will be dealing with, and if the game is appropriate for them or not. In the rating category there is a descriptor telling general content of the game and recommended age of the audience and gamers.
ESRB rating categories
Depending on the parameters and content included in the game, such product will be labeled with a rating category, which are:
- Rating Pending: the game was released and the rating is still on process.
- Everyone: games that can be played by children and youngsters of all ages.
- Teen: this rating category may be related with moderate violence, blood and soft sexual references.
- Mature: games with this rating are usually violent and may have drug and sex references.
- Adults only: rating for games that include strong references to sex, gambling, drugs, violence and fore.
